These Casa Papelillo photos follow the house from the cliff edge inward. The main palapa comes first, under its hand-woven palm roof — the soul of the property, where a table set for 12 sits beneath 180 degrees of open ocean. Then the infinity pool, which dissolves into the horizon at the exact hour the sun goes down. Between November and February the same frame often holds humpback whales in the bay below.

The five suites are here too: the Sun with its outdoor bathtub on the upper terrace and a second tub carved from lava stone indoors; the Star and its daybeds, in golden light most of the afternoon; the Moon at ground level with its oceanfront balcony; the Eclipse, two queen beds and a shaded balcony, built for families; and the Constellation on the garden floor, part library, part media room, part office.
What the images cannot carry is the sound. The Pacific is loud here, and constant, and it is the thing every guest mentions first. Nor the temperature of the stone underfoot in the morning, or the smell of salt and jungle moving through rooms that have no glass between them and the coast. The architecture was built to let weather in rather than keep it out.
