Yes, you can have a destination wedding or host a retreat at a private villa in Careyes, on Mexico’s Pacific coast. Casa Papelillo is on Chamela Bay, ten minutes north of Careyes. It hosts weddings for up to 150 guests, as well as retreats, milestone birthdays and rehearsal dinners. Every event needs a whole-villa booking and our prior written approval.

1. Can you get married or host a retreat at a private villa in Careyes?

Yes. Casa Papelillo is an oceanfront villa 20 metres from the Pacific, with a private cliff staircase to the water and private access to four beaches. Twelve guests stay in five suites, looked after by a staff of four: a butler, a chef and two housekeepers.

For a wedding or larger celebration, the house becomes a private wedding venue for up to 150 guests. The terraces, pool deck and palapa face the bay, so the ceremony, dinner and dancing can all stay on site. The house is in a gated community with 24/7 security, so the day stays private.

2. What kinds of events does Casa Papelillo host?

Celebrations for registered guests are always welcome. With prior written approval, the villa also hosts events beyond the twelve house guests:

  • weddings and vow renewals
  • yoga, wellness and meditation retreats
  • milestone birthdays and anniversaries
  • rehearsal dinners and welcome parties
  • family reunions and corporate retreats
  • bachelorette and bachelor weekends

A retreat for twelve who all stay in the house is simply a stay. Approval applies once guests from outside the house party attend. Unapproved parties or events are not permitted.

3. How does approval work?

Events are an extra to a whole-villa booking: reserve the villa first, then request your event. There are four steps:

  1. Reserve the villa for your dates.
  2. Request your event using the “Host an event with us” form: type, dates, start and end times, guest numbers, areas and vendors.
  3. Review and sign the Event Addendum. We confirm the details, the event fee, the event’s end time and the house rules in writing. The event is approved once both sides have signed.
  4. Send every name in advance. Community security checks every attendee and vendor at the gate, so the full list reaches us before the event.

The community’s rules don’t restrict the type of event. What they require is that every name is sent ahead and checked on entry, as for any stay. The event’s end time is agreed in the Event Addendum.

4. What does the villa provide, and what do hosts arrange?

The villa provides the house, the setting and the staff. Hosts bring in the event services, usually through a planner.

Your butler acts as your planner on the ground, arranging activities and reservations across the region throughout your stay. For a wedding or any event beyond the house party, we also recommend hiring an experienced local event planner to coordinate the caterers, décor, music and security on the day.

5. When is the best time for a wedding on the Costalegre?

November to April is the dry season, with clear skies, warm days and the most reliable weather for an outdoor event. It is also the busier half of the year. The busiest weeks are Christmas and New Year, Chinese New Year, Easter and Ondalinda week in November, when a five-night minimum stay applies. At other times, the minimum is two nights.

May to October is green, hot and much quieter. The eastern Pacific hurricane season officially runs from mid-May to the end of November, so plan a tent or an indoor fallback for any event then. For a month-by-month view of weather, sea temperature and festivals, see our guide to the best time to visit the Costalegre.

6. How is an event priced?

Events are priced on request, by event type, guest numbers and duration, on top of the whole-villa booking. There is no fixed event fee, because a dinner for 30 and a wedding for 150 are different undertakings. To get a quote, reserve your dates and send the event form. We reply with the Event Addendum and the event fee. See Events at Casa Papelillo for the full picture, and how to get to Careyes for your guests’ travel.
